On 22nd March 2017, Employee’s Compensation (Amendment) Bill, 2017 was passed by Rajya Sabha. On 9th August, 2016, Lok Sabha had passed this bill with amendment in Employee’s Compensation Act, 1923. This bill’s focus is on financial help to those employees and their dependents if they go through any industrial accidents or they are going though any occupational diseases.
Important Highlights of Employee’s Compensation (Amendment) Bill
- This bill has a provision that an employer will have to inform his/her employee of his/her right to compensation under the Act in writing.
- If an employer fails to inform his employee of his right to compensation, he will be penalized with a fine ranging from fifty thousand to one lakh rupees.
- The Act has provision that appeals can be made against orders related to compensation, distribution of compensation, award of penalty or interest but the amount in dispute is at least Rs. 300.
