UNESCO Peace Prize 2017 goes to Mayor of Italian Island

On 19th April 2017, Mayor of the Italian island of Lampedusa “Giusi Nicolini” received UNESCO Peace prize. UNESCO Peace prize is also known as Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize.

Mr. Giusi Nicolini was presented with this award for this efforts in saving the lives of migrants and refugees. The UNESCO peace prize jury “recognized Giusi for her boundless humanity and a great commitment in the matter of refugee crisis management and integration in response to the arrival of thousands of refugees on the shores of Lampedusa and elsewhere in Italy.”

When Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize was started?

Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize was started in 1989 during the 25th session of General Conference of UNESCO. It was supported by 120 countries.

This award is for the honour of People or Institutions who make significant contribution to promoting, seeking, safeguarding or maintaining peace.
